ICDP project with the Embera Chami
An extensive report (in Spanish) is posted on the ICDP webpage under November news: www.icdp.info
The ICDP programme was implemented with 17 families in the Embera Chami community, with the objective of generating more empathic attitudes in adult-child relationships. The ICDP sensitization method consisted in accompanying parents in some of their activities with children in order to demonstrate good quality interaction in practice and then gradually involve them in processes of reflection, discussion and sharing.
Amata Aristizabal, was one of the 2 trainers involved in the project: “The second phase of the ICDP project with the indigenous Indian community Embera Chami has been completed. The project succeeded in bringing the difficult situation of these isolated families, living in the mountains near Cordoba, Quindío, to the attention of the local authorities. As result there are now education and health care provisions for children and their parents. In addition, the mayor approved the building of adequate sanitation and a kitchen to cater for the whole community. We acted as mediators between the community and the local government. Now our task is just to offer some additional support. With ICDP we saw results, as the high levels of violent behaviour have diminished, although there is more to be done. The community has started to show more caring behaviour towards each other and especially towards children; we also noticed that the young people are now seeking and often finding employment at nearby farms, whereas before they were only interested in stealing and some had committed suicide out of desperation.”
PLANS FOR 2009: Amata will continue to visit the community and will offer training in ICDP to health workers who have been designated to work with the community.
The ICDP project in the province of Huila:
ICDP is continuing to be implemented all over the Huila province, in 37 towns, through health, education and social services – these Ministries institutionalized ICDP as one of their program in 2007. The project sponsors are Ecopetrol and Unicef, with support also from SD Britain.
During 2008, 142 agents from Health, Education and Social Services received training to become ICDP facilitators and are in process of implementing the ICDP sensitization meetings with 4600 families. Refresher workshops were delivered to 278 persons, previously trained as ICDP promoters and facilitators. Their work was also followed up with field visits. There were 4 workshops for supervisors.
We worked with a Unicef evaluator on adapting the ICDP evaluation procedures. The base line study involved filming interactions of 60 families (adult-child dyads) and administering 200 questionnaires.
PLANS FOR 2009: ICDP activities will take place at 4 levels: there will be Facilitator level workshops for 142 persons, Promoter level training for 1400 agents and trainer level workshops for a core group of 20 persons. In addition we plan to set up networks for parents as a means of sustaining ICDP on community levels. At the end of June the post implementation tests will start to take place and an evaluation report will be produced at the end of August.
Province of Chocó: ICDP has spread to 4000 families at risk in this guerrilla controlled province, the poorest area in Colombia. We held refresher workshops for facilitators.
PLAN FOR 2009: We plan to follow up the work of promoters and adapt the ICDP material for use with indigenous families.
Province of Santander: ICDP reached an agreement with the Health Ministry to start ICDP in 2009.
PLAN FOR 2009: To implement ICDP in 16 towns of the province
Province of Quindío: In the Colegio Luis Arango Cardona, La Tebaida, Quindio, near Amanecer we developed an ICDP pilot project using a new model of implementation specifically adapted for use with school teachers which was very successful.
PLAN FOR 2009: To follow up this work in 2009 with a new project.
Province of Antioquia: In Medellin ICDP is currently being implemented by 3 trainers, dozens of facilitators, through the University of Luis Amigo and a local NGO, called FAN.
PLAN FOR 2009: top hold workshops for both teams.
